What is Chinese Medicine?
Chinese medicine is a system of medicine that has diagnosed, treated, and prevented illness for thousands of years. Based on the observation of nature and our interaction with the environment, Chinese medicine works with the body’s inherent healing power to restore balance and maintain optimal health. Treatments include acupuncture, herbal formulas, cupping, guasha, acupressure massage, breath work and movement, diet, and lifestyle advice. To learn more about Chinese herbal medicine click here.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the most well known facet of Chinese Medicine primarily due to its effectiveness in treating a wide variety of health concerns. Acupuncture works by inserting fine needles into the body at specific points to redirect and balance the flow of energy. This restores your bodies’ capacity to heal itself, thus eliminating your symptoms. Click here to learn more about conditions treated according to the World Health Organization.
What can I expect from a first visit?
A first visit begins with a thorough intake where we will discuss your health history and goals for treatment, followed by a treatment which may include a combination of acupuncture, acupressure massage, cupping, guasha, and an herbal prescription. Your individual treatment plan will be discussed at this time. Please arrive 10 minutes early to fill out forms in the waiting area. Loose fitting clothing is best to allow access to the arms and legs. You may be asked to dress down for access to the back. It is recommended to eat 2-3 hours prior to treatment. What can I expect after a treatment?
Most patients feel relaxed and at ease after a treatment. It is recommended to rest, avoid alcohol and heavy foods, and drink plenty of water. You many notice new sensations or emotions arise as your body shifts and opens new pathways to greater health and balance. This is a positive sign that change is happening, however, if any of it feels uncomfortable or overwhelming, please make contact and we will figure it out together.
How often will I come?
Acupuncture is a cumulative medicine, meaning each treatment builds upon the last to gradually restore your body's natural balance and optimum health. Weekly appointments are recommended initially until significant changes are experienced and maintained (commonly 4-6 weeks). At that point we will discuss movement into biweekly or monthly treatments as maintenance. For acute conditions such as cold/flu, acute injury, cancer care, or debilitating emotional states, 2-3 visits a week may be recommended initially for optimum results.
How many treatments do I need?
The number of treatments necessary to resolve a specific condition will vary depending on the severity of the condition and the underlying constitution of the individual. Chronic conditions take longer to treat, typically 12-15 treatments for significant changes. More acute conditions can often be resolved within 3-6 treatments. It is important to remember that it took your body time to build up imbalances, and it will take time to shift back to greater health. Cultivating patience and self compassion is always helpful when stepping into a healing journey.
Do I need to have a specific complaint to benefit from treatment?
Chinese medicine is at its root a preventative medicine. Sophisticated diagnostic tools allow a practitioner to notice imbalances in the body before symptoms appear. Choosing acupuncture for health maintenance is the best thing you could do for yourself! Monthly or seasonal treatments are an excellent way to keep your body in balance and your immune system strong throughout the year.
